We left Rescue Bay this morning at 5:00 am bound for Fury Cove, a 10 hour cruise. We received the report from Chris Parker last night, and he said that Wednesday the 10th was our “best” day to cross Cape Caution, so we discussed our options and decided for another long cruise day. The weather was beautiful, and the absence of fog in Rescue Bay was a good omen for us. We did get just a tiny bit of dense fog on the way out, but it dissipated quickly. We worked our way up Seaforth Channel, and had an amazing encounter with a young Orca Whale playing in the waves. Definitely a moment to remember.
Seas were incredibly calm all the way to Shearwater, and we had a moment of regret as we passed them by and continued on our journey. The cruise down Fitz Hugh Sound was uneventful. Some waves and chop along the way but the sun was out, the sky and sea was blue, and seas were relatively calm: What more could we ask for? (OK a shorter cruise day…..).
We entered Fury Cove about 3PM, definitely ready for a REST! This cove is always busy and full of boats making their way North or South through Cape Caution. We have seen it CHOCKED FULL in here, and were reluctantly prepared to journey on to a different nearby anchorage if necessary. Luck was on our side, and there was plenty of room for us in the beautiful anchorage, so we took a rest, cleaned up, got dinner started, did a FaceTime call with the kids, looked once again at the weather for tomorrow and prepared for yet ANOTHER early morning departure. We shall see how it goes tomorrow. We had planned on staying in Pt. McNeil, but their docks were full up (as happens this time of year) so we will stay on Malcom Island in Sointula. We have not been there for many years! We enjoyed it last time, and the most important thing is that it gives us a dock to land on after what I am sure will be another very long day!
