We don’t have a lot to report today. We spent our second day here going for a walk, catching up on emails, etc. Our intention was to head South tomorrow for Hanus Inlet but we have been tracking a nasty blow coming through this part of Alaska for the last week. It was first predicted for Saturday but moved up to tomorrow. We looked a several models and determined that around 9:00 p.m. Saturday night there is predicted to be 25+ knot winds where we were going! We decided being here at the dock was a better choice to an untested inlet where we would worry all night long whether or not we would drag anchor.
There are quite a few interesting homes along the dirt, one lane road, that goes end to end on this village of roughly 60 full time residents. We know this because we met the woman who basically runs the library, the museum, community center, and community generator, etc. You get the idea. The community is close. Interestingly, below is a picture from 1920 of this community.
Back in the day in the early 1900s this village was the wild, Wild West. Bank Robbers lived in the village along with fishers and loggers. There was a bar, a brothel, a store, and a hardware/fishing store. All the basics. The building you see on the left is still standing and is now the small community grocery store.. The proprietor is a kind man and the store is quite well stocked with the essentials and more! We stocked up and were happy that this was available for us.
And there were flowers, then and now. We joke about how living on Guemes Island is “Island light”. Living in Tenakee Springs is “island hard.” A wonderful place but a real commitment. We shall see what tomorrow brings weather wise, but we will be here at the dock what ever happens.
