We left Tracy Arm Cove this morning around 7:00 am with a destination of Taku Harbor. Last night our friends Kevin and Karen dropped by our boat and shared some of their fresh caught halibut which we will have for dinner tonight. Below is a picture of Kevin with his 18 pound halibut.
Our three and a half hour cruise today was literally like glass, probably the smoothest cruise we have had on our journey this summer. It was just our boat, an occasional iceberg and several cruise ships passing us by on their way to Juneau.
This picture with accompanying birds reminded me of the song, “Hitching A Ride.”
Here is a picture from our Navionics of the passing cruise ships, three of them ,and they were passing by us going about 18 knots en route to Juneau. All we can say is that we are so grateful NOT to be on any of them!!
We arrived at Taku Harbor around 10:30. We were the only boat here! (Two fishing boats have since arrived this afternoon). This protected harbor has two huge docks that are well maintained by Alaska Fish and Wildlife. There is no power or water, but there is quiet, a great view of the mountains and some really “interesting” cabins that can be occupied free of cost for a truly authentic Alaskan experience.
This is one of the free “public” cabins. It has a real “rustic” quality to it. And there is even an outhouse just behind the cabin. We thought our kids who live in Los Angeles would really enjoy this place!
The local guides reviewing Taku Harbor tell visitors to be “Bear Aware.” Here I am geared up with my bear spray and my rattle can (there’s no coke in this can just rocks).
In the afternoon we pulled down our tandem kayak and went for a long paddle around the harbor. We are heading to Juneau tomorrow hoping to participate in “Celebration”, a 5 day gathering of Alaskan native people which occurs every 2 years. But for now I need to start preparing our fresh halibut for dinner.
I notice the bear spray.
Hopefully we won’t have to use it:)
