We pulled up anchor from Tracy Arm Cove this morning at 7:00 am to ride the current and hopefully avoid cruise ships.
Marlene got a paddle salute from the canoe boat that we first met in Petersburg and will reunite with them in Juneau. (They asked us if we wanted to trade “ships.” We just smiled).
As soon as we were outside the cove we immediately saw two cruise ships just ahead of us: an American Cruise Ship and a National Geographic Ship. We decided to stay behind them for at least the first hour of our 3.5 hour cruise down Tracy Arm.
We encountered this iceberg just outside the harbor from us. As you can see there are quite a few birds hitching a ride.
Some of the icebergs look almost like “ice sculptures.”
Along the cruise there was breathtaking beauty wherever we looked.
This is as close as we could get to the glacier, probably a quarter of a mile away. Going any further would have involved more than dodging ice as we had been doing for the last hour and actually getting into pushing ice away. We decided to call it good, revel in making it as far as we did, then turn around and head back to Tracy Arm Cove. We will stay here tonight then move on to Taku tomorrow. We hope to see our sailboat friends, Karen and Kevin in the cove later this afternoon.
