Rocking and Rolling in Cleveland Passage

Alaska Bound 2024

Friday May 31st, 2024

We left Petersburg this morning at 8:00 am to ride the current and the wind on our back to our intended destination of Foot Island. The 4.5 hr cruise was fast and just a bit lumpy but nothing unusual. (Waves were about 3 to 4 feet with eight second intervals). By the time we arrived at Foot Island around noon the winds were pick up significantly. We dropped a hook, made sure we were anchored and then decided to have lunch and determine whether we stay or not. Foote is a fairly small inlet and due to the winds when we swung to our beam the wind really rolled us around. After lunch we decided to pull up anchor and retrace about 30 minutes to Cleveland Passage where we had anchored last summer and found it to be good holding. We are now anchored here but it’s going to be a long night. We currently have 3 knot winds with 6 to 8 knots of gusts. This is predicted to increase to around 17 knots around 4 am. Of course it’s 4 am. Marlene volunteered to get up—not!!! Actually neither of us will probably get much sleep tonight. It looks like our best opportunity tomorrow will be around 10:00 am for about a 5.5 hour cruise to Tracy Arm. Wish us luck.

Just us and the military style sailboat here in Cleveland Passage.

Technically that’s just a ketch, but I suppose all those windows could be cannon doors 😀 ;<} to make it a military ketch …..
Stay safe and get some sleep 🙏

Thanks Dave. As you point out just outside our doorstep there is a nasty swirl building. All the folks south of here from Ketchikan north have been held up by this and it doesn’t look too clear until tomorrow. It’s reasonably good right now. Looks like it’s going to pick up around 4 AM. I’ll get Marlene up to check it out at that point, ha ha.
