We left Cannery Cove around 7:00 am. As reported the crabbing was great and I spent the afternoon shucking the crab as evidenced above.
Last night we had the good fortune to get invited on to a 62 foot Selene Trawler that was also anchored in Cannery Cove. Dean and Theresa Klein own the boat, “SaltHeart.” It is an amazing boat with four state rooms, five heads (bathrooms), crew quarters and a beautiful pilot house and galley (kitchen). Marlene is ready to upgrade. Just one problem….about 3.5 million dollars. Oh well, it was a pleasure getting on the boat and sharing wine and food with them. They are lovely people and she is a retired ER nurse so she and Marlene had lots to talk about. Back to the journey.
We crossed Frederick Sound in “rolly-Polly” seas mostly because we were going from west to east and the chop was hitting us on the beam. We had good protection from a couple of islands and the journey was short. We saw a few whales in the distance and we passed through the “Other San Juan Islands” located in Frederick Sound.
We anchored in about 45 feet of good holding mud (or so the books say, the night is still young) although it took us a couple of tries to get the anchor in a spot we liked, mostly because another boat was in “Marlenes spot”. Sure enough after the third try, we had a good hold, and the other boat pulled anchor and left! We also came upon two familiar boats. First, the Chiganoff which was moored next to us in Petersburg.
Soon after we arrived our friends John and Gerry on M/V Katessa arrived and they took the “spot” that was vacated by the previous boat. We had a chance to catch up with them and tour their boat that was made in the Netherlands. They are heading north to Juneau to pick up friends from England.
Tomorrow we are back to Petersburg where we start our planning for the journey home. We estimate arriving back in Anacortes around the middle of August.
Sure enough the admiral always chooses great anchorage, if someone else isn’t in her spot!! Just love it :>)
That 62 sounds amazing but they can’t tie up to park buoys in the lower 48 ;>) Crab fest looks like it was a huge success. Takes almost as long to clean, cook and pick the meat as the hours the pots were soaked!! Well worth it!!
Safe rides back to Anacortes. We are in Tod Inlet beside Buchart Gardens getting a flower fix. We head to Genoa Bay in a couple days, we will toast you at dinner in memory of our dinner together with you two not long ago.
Ciao! Dave
Thanks Dave. Have a wonderful time in Bucharest Gardens and Genoa Bay.
Are the trees in the third photo damaged or dying; the ones in the foreground look brown, while those in the back look grey?
Vera, very good observation. We wondering what was going on as well. The answer is wind whips through these coves and literally blows all the needles off the trees, leaving them barren. Fellow boaters tell us its a good sign for weather watch.
