Log Booms in the Pacific Northwest

We have officially entered the territory of Log Booms and log dodging. We see less of these in urban areas like Anacortes but they are often and plentiful in Canadian waters. They become quite challenging when you have to share a narrow passageway like Dodd Narrows the tug booms. We try, at all costs, to avoid them.

Interestingly, these floating “rafts” of logs were stored in Fidalgo Bay by tugs to mills and markets near and far. A little over a century ago, old-growth forests of massive firs and cedars covered much of the Pacific Northwest. Pioneers discovered a vast expanse of densely growing timber and so it began. We don’t see logging in this manner as much now but it is still impressive when you do.

”Watch out Greg,” shouts Marlene. “Big log ahead.”
