Arrived in Ketchikan

The above light house is the beginning of Dixon Entrance. Please notice the calm waters. This 10 hour cruise around Dixon Entrance was our fifth and the smoothest one yet. We had relatively smooth seas the entire cruise save for about 3 hours of 2 foot swells with 7 second intervals which was very tolerable (actually easy!). The good news was that the night before we were invited on Monica and Martin’s 60 foot Tollycraft for drinks . Martin is a Kewie and an engineer. This boat was tricked out and looks like new. He literally has changed out everything save for the engines (which is next because they are loud and growly) and they like great wine which they generously shared with us. They left first this morning around 6:30 cruising at 12 knots. We left at 7:00 a.m. cruising at about 8.5 knots, but today we had the current going for us so it was more like 9 knots most of the journey. Initially we had planned on just going to Dundas Island but the seas were to smooth to pass up. There was a caravan of about 9 boats crossing Dixon Entrance today. We were in the middle of the pack and everyone was reporting back to us how the water looked up ahead. I cannot begin to tell you how comforting this is when you are cruising this long a distance. Misery loves company; boaters love good news.

We are exhausted. We immediately took showers and are planning on walking up to the Fish House for fresh Halibut Tacos. In true Alaskan style we are a 40 foot boat in a 30 ft slip with our stern hanging out about 10 feet (with a good spring line in place!). We were deep in the harbor and in line with the other boats. Shawn, the Ketchikan Yacht Club manager says we are fine and he knows this harbor. There is a club house, new washing machines, showers (but we like our own boat showers), and friendly people. We are camped out here for the next four days until we decide where we want to go next. Just grateful to be safe, happy in the ALASKA!!! Any by the way…….it stopped raining!!!!

Karen, Thanks to you and Kevin to introducing us to Shawn. The Ketchikan Yacht Club is a great place. The people are friendly, helpful, and best of all they have a a brand new high capacity washer and dryer. Yesterday when Shawn was returning from a successful day of fishing he gave us fresh halibut. We will make halibut sandwiches for dinner tonight. Yea.
