It’s been a pretty quiet day here in Petersburg. I like the weather app “Weather Underground” for giving me a reasonably accurate prediction of the weather. When I looked at it over coffee this morning the report was for a window of opportunity without rain from 8 to noon. “OK Marlene let’s do our laundry this morning, go for a walk and grab breakfast out.” We did all three and were home before the rain started at noon. And its been raining since. Good day for reading, sewing, and watching the boats.

This is a fishing trawler two boats down from us named, “FYKE.” The owner is a friendly soul named John. He is a contractor by profession but like so many Petersburgians he has an obsession with fishing. He told me the boat was made in 1968 and it was the first fiberglass fishing boat here in Petersburg. He bought it in the early 70s and he takes it out during the summers fishing for chum. The boat has 40,000 hours—yup, you read that right—40,000 hours. It’s a John Deere diesel that he maintains and says it continues to work like a champ. Guess I have a few more hours to go on our boat.

We met some locals yesterday who came by to admire our boat and we invited them in. One thing led to another and we are going to get a tour of the island this afternoon and then join them for dinner at their favorite restaurant. The people in Petersburg are amazingly friendly. Everyone says hello. Everyone smiles. Everyone seems genuinely happy. It’s a special place.

The weather prediction for the weekend is sunshine. Yah. About time.
