Boat Quilts: Prince Rupert

Alaska Bound 2024

June 1st, 2025

We are still sitting in Prince Rupert, waiting out the storm and getting ready to forge North as soon as the winds are in our favor. We have heard back from our Meteorologist Chris Parker and it looks like things are settling down and we will be able to continue our journey tomorrow. He thinks that the safest path is to break up the long journey with a stop off at Dundas island, and anchor there for the night, then continue onto Ketchikan the following morning. At this point, we are in no hurry and it is good to check out this option for future trips, so we will go with it and plan for a mid morning departure tomorrow.

In the meantime…..we received several very nice comments on Marlene’s quilt, so I thought we would take the time to show you the other quilts she has made specifically for our boat. Take it away Marlene!

OK! I made the quilt you see above “Bella Luna” for our first 32 Nordic Tug, Tradition1 as we now call her. I purchased this pattern and fabric in Anchorage when I was there doing an injection training for a pharmaceutical company I was working for at the time. I didn’t get many referrals in Alaska, however when I did get one it always seemed to be in the absolute dead of winter!! I found a quilt shop in the downtown Anchorage area, and this is the result. It now resides on the upper bunk in our second state room, better known as our onboard larder and storage room!

The fabric and laser appliqué cutout outs for the next 3 quilts were purchased on a subsequent trip to Anchorage (also in the dead of winter). The patient was actually in Wasilla, and he worked the nightshift so he wanted me to do his training in the morning. I can vividly remember getting into my SUV for the drive from Anchorage to Wasilla in total darkness. I was happy it was not snowing, but there was lots of snow on the ground. As I made my way to Wasilla the sun began to rise and revealed some of the most spectacular scenery I have ever encountered. Amazing mountains jutting up and everything covered with a clean layer of ice and snow. Just beautiful. The training went fine, so I decided to stop by Silvia’s Quilt Depot which was on the road back to Anchorage. They were friendly and I had a great time picking out the fabrics for the next 3 quilts.

This small quilt hangs in the passageway to our stateroom. The native design of the whale is laser appliqué by a Native Alaskan artist. This piece is fused onto other fabric, and the quilt design was mine, specifically made to fit in this small space.

I love this next wall hanging, but no one sees it except Greg and I because it is also in the second state room next to the mirror. Same Native designer of the laser appliqué cutout.

Finally we have this little wall hanging in the main salon. All of these quilts were great fun to make, and little did I know when I made them that someday they would get to see Alaska again!

Marlene, loved the quilts. Don’t know that I’ve ever seen any of them. Happy sailing.
